Roseanne Williams Artist Statement:

My repertoire includes lyrical freedom, blends of rich vivid colors, bold shapes and forms, clear depictions of the elements of the brushstrokes, and layering lush color to evoke light and shadow. I am excited by the process of painting and using different tools to move the paint on the canvas to create the striking visual and the emotional impact for the viewer.
There are varied sources where I find inspiration for my work. My lyrical abstractions are often the interpretations of the passages in music. Art and music affect us profoundly, and they both provoke emotions and engage our minds. I enjoy listening to jazz or classical music when I am painting. The magnificent Italian landscape, sunrises and sunsets, and the ocean are often represented in my paintings as well.  Across this spectrum my minds eye travels back to the places that I love and that have influenced me.
Over the years, I have been fortunate to study with experienced abstract painters from Canada, the U.S. and Italy. The ability to travel extensively throughout the world has provided me a wonderful opportunity to work closely with accomplished artists plus study the works of famous artists in museums around the World. It is these experiences that have shaped my style and technique.

An artist’s style evolves with every painting, every teacher and every artist – past and present. My transformation to abstraction began when I studied painting with Jack Meanwell at the Cincinnati Art Academy, and later with Alvaro Baragli in Florence, Italy, after I moved there in 1996.  Along the way, I discovered abstract expressionism and was intrigued by the techniques used by Hans Hoffmann and this became my inspiration.  The “Push Pull” painting method, which he pioneered proved that the illusion of space, depth and even movement could be created using color and shape rather than representational forms. Bold color planes emerge and then recede into energetic forms. My repertoire includes lyrical freedom, blends of rich vivid colors, bold shapes and forms, clear depictions of the elements of the brushstrokes, and layering lush color to evoke light and shadow.  There are varied sources where I find inspiration for my work. My desire as an artist is to capture the imagination of the viewer.
Visual and emotional, conscious and subconscious, the imagination spurred on through the experimentation with textures, shapes and form,  and explosions of strong colors: the imagination forced to be agile, moving between figurative and abstract, seeing the visual while feeling the implicit passione and sensations.
